ello. Welcome to IELTS Preparation. Where we look at the skills you’ll need to write, read, speak and listen to formal, academic English.
In today’s lesson, we’ll have a quick look at homonyms & suffixes.
Homonyms can be words that sound the same but have different meanings, like their and there.
There are two different types of homonyms.

Homophones: They sound the same even though they’re spell differently,
sight and site – sale and sail – fair and fare

Homographs: They are spelt the same but pronounced differently,
/rid/read and read / red / - wind / w∂Ind / wind / wInd / live and live
– Another way that words can change is by adding suffix – able to the verb we form the adj.
– For example: read becomes readable, count – countable & recognize – recognizable
Learning suffixes is a quick way to expand your vocabulary. Two other common suffices: ist, ism
Ist when we talk about the people who do certain jobs.
Journalist, a chemist, a geologist or a psychologist.
- ism to talk about beliefs, ideologies or movements. Buddhism, modernism, realism, Marxism.

در سراسر جهان IELTS به عنوان ارزیابی توانمندی افراد جهت ادامه تحصیل و یا کارآموزی در کشورهای انگلیسی زبان شناخته می شود خوشبختانه این امتحان در ایران به طور رسمی برگزار می شود از این رو بسیاری از دانشجویان و اشخاصی که قصد ادامه تحصیل و یا مهاجرت به کشورهای انگلیسی زبان را دارند در این امتحان شرکت می جویند IELTSگواهی زبان محسوب نمی شود بلکه سطح توانمندی داوطلب را در استفاده از زبان انگلیسی تعیین می نماید نمره IELTS از ۱ تا ۹ متغییر می باشد از دیدگاه برگزارکنندگان این امتحان این سوال که حداقل نمره قبولی چیست نامفهوم است زیرا سازمان ها، دانشگاه ها، سفارتخانه ها و یا مراکز کار در کشور ثالث هستند که امتیاز قابل قبول خود را به داوطلب اعلام می کنند. چگونه می توان نتایج مطلوبی در امتحانات IELTS کسب کرد؟ پاسخ به این سوال برای گروه های مختلف داوطلبین متفاوت است زیرا در برخی موارد حتی امتیاز ۵/۴ مورد قبول واقع شده است در صورتی که برای ادامه تحصیل حداقل امتیاز ۵/۶ بوده است این امتحان وابسته به دانشگاه کمبریج، IDP استرالیا و British Council می باشد که هر کدام سهم مساوی از این امتحان را دارند. متاسفانه در حال حاضر IDP استرالیا در ایران از طریق سازمان سنجش اقدام به برگزاری امتحان می نماید و این باعث شده است که عده کثیری از داوطلبان نتوانند در امتحان شرکت کرده و مجبورند به خارج از کشور مراجعه نمایند و در آن جا امتحان دهند.
Contents of the Test
An IELTS test is made up of four modules. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules depending on whether you are an ACADEMIC or GENERAL TRAINING candidate.
The modules are normally taken in the order Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, and are timed as follows:
Listening approximately 30 minutes
Reading 60 minutes
Writing 60 minutes
Speaking 11-14 minutes
